A Year-in-Review: 10 Cleanroom Projects from 2020

With 2020 now behind us, we prepared a recap of some of last year’s cleanroom projects.

1) Hospital Rooms with Positive & Negative Air Pressure

  • Industry: Healthcare/Oncology/
  • Approximate Total Dimension: 34,000 sq.ft.
  • Isolation Room Dimension: 336 & 354 sq.ft.

To minimize the spread of airborne infection, healthcare facilities have designed airborne infectious isolation (AII) rooms with negative-pressure differential and/or protective environment (PE) rooms with positive-pressure differential. The isolation chambers provided by Mecart will be used for COVID-19 patients and subsequently for immunosuppressed patients in oncology, allowing long-term use of the investment after the pandemic.

2) 503B CLEANROOM FOR DRUG COMPOUNDING CMO – OUTSOURCING FACILITY 

  • ISO Class: ISO 7 & ISO 8
  • Location: South East, USA
  • Industry: Pharma / CMO / Drug Compounding
  • Approximate dimension: 3,000 sq. ft.

As a registered 503B Outsourcing Facility with the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), this company specializes in drug compounding for ophthalmic and inhalation products. Mecart was selected by this southeastern contract development manufacturer (CMO) for their cleanroom project.

3) CGMP CLEANROOM FOR CELL AND GENE THERAPY FACILITY

  • GMP Grades B and C
  • Location: New Jersey, USA
  • Industry: Biotechnology
  • Approximate dimension: 2,000 sq. ft.

Mecart has partnered with NJIT to engineer and install high-quality GMP Grade B and C clean rooms where scientists, engineers and researchers will forge ahead in medicine’s new frontier.

4) CELL PRODUCTION CLEANROOM FOR ANIMAL LABORATORY

  • ISO Class: ISO 6 & ISO 7
  • Location: Western Canada
  • Industry: Biotechnology
  • Approximate dimension: 1250 sq. ft.

The 1,250 sq.ft. animal laboratory includes an animal room, a surgery room, and a cell preparation room for cell culture and media prep operations. This modular clean room lab also contains air showers, interlocks/gowning rooms and the HVAC system.

5) CLEANROOM FOR NUTRACEUTICAL INDUSTRY

  • Location: Nova Scotia, Canada
  • Industry: Pharmaceutical and Food
  • Approximate dimension: 1,600 square feet of cleanroom space

 

This U-shaped ISO 7 cleanroom features two mirrored workspaces that connect via a shared air shower and wash station. The client manufactures and exports high quality hydrolyzed collagen and gelatin made from wild fish for the Food and Pharmaceutical industries.

6) LABS FOR CLINICAL TRIALS – DRUG DEVELOPMENT

  • ISO Class: ISO 7
  • Location: Central USA
  • Industry: Clinical Research – Clinical Trials for Drug Development
  • Approximate dimension: 400 sq. ft.

The Phase 1 Unit now includes a suite with 4 individual cleanrooms for both hazardous and non-hazardous processes. A shared anteroom and a hazardous storage space complete the lab layout. Very limited space above the cleanrooms (only 18 inches) was challenging for ductwork installation, but Mecart’s engineers were successful and the complete HVAC system is in place.

7) MEDICAL DEVICE CLEANROOM WITH MOLDING ROOM + QA LAB

  • Location: New York, USA
  • Industry: Medical Devices
  • Approximate dimension: 21,000 sq.ft.

This state-of-the-art medical device cleanroom is not yet completed. The 18,000 square feet clean room will contain a Molding Room for the injection molding of medical parts and a Quality Assurance Laboratory.

8) CLEANROOM FOR BIOMEDICAL MOLECULAR PCQ TESTING

  • Location: Quebec, Canada
  • Industry: Biomedical  / MedTech
  • Approximate dimension: 120  feet of cleanroom wall with 5 openings for conveyor belts and windows

The ISO 8 space addition includes a gowning room and a full production line with 5 openings for conveyor belts. Mecart designed and installed cutting-edge cleanroom panels to complete the warehouse and shipping dock area. The wall design also needed to provide a large enough opening for equipment delivery. Additionally, Mecart’s modular solution made it possible for our installation team to work in tandem with the client’s production equipment delivery without causing delay.

9) IN-HOSPITAL COMPOUNDING CLEANROOM

  • Location: New Jersey, USA
  • Industry: Drug Compounding/Pharmacy
  • Approximate dimension: Small buffer room + anteroom

This Rehabilitation Center in New-Jersey was in need of ISO 7 space for pharmacy compounding, but space was limited. Mecart designed and installed a custom cleanroom in what was once the pharmacy director’s office.

10) NON-HAZARDOUS DRUG COMPOUNDING CLEANROOM (USP 797)

  • ISO Class: ISO 7 & ISO 8
  • Location: Ontario, Canada
  • Industry: Drug Compounding/Pharmacy
  • Approximate dimension: 430 sq.ft.

This pharmacy needed a new clean room for sterile non-hazardous compounding preparations. The cleanroom is positive pressurize and equipped with 4 workstations. The buffer zone is an ISO 7 clean environment with an  ISO 8 anteroom/antechamber.
